Practical design guidance from the Stone Universe team, informed by more than 25 years of supplying premium natural stone across the United States.
Choose a layout that suits the architecture
Paver pattern affects how large a patio feels, how the eye moves, and how effectively the layout handles changes in direction. A rectangular grid complements modern architecture; modular and irregular patterns create a relaxed rhythm.
Ashlar and jumbo modular patterns
Ashlar combines coordinated stone sizes in a repeating modular arrangement. Eight-size patterns create fine-grained variety, while four-size jumbo patterns emphasize larger pieces and fewer joints.
Components can include 8-by-8, 8-by-16, 16-by-16, 16-by-24, 24-by-24, and 24-by-36 inches, depending on collection. Confirm the exact packaged pattern rather than assuming every color uses identical modules.
Real stone is not simply a finish. It is part of the architecture and the way a place is experienced.
Versailles and random-size layouts
Versailles typically uses four compatible sizes for a timeless European-inspired arrangement. Random three-size patterns offer a looser appearance while preserving a controlled installation grid.
Joint width, thickness, edging, and cutting allowances should be planned together. Dry-laying a sample section helps establish the right joint strategy.
Calculate quantities before ordering
Measure usable paving area, account for edges and obstacles, and discuss waste allowances with your installer. Ask about package coverage, pallets, current lots, and coordinating bullnose or treads.
