Match the stone to the application
A patio, driveway, pool deck, retaining wall, and outdoor fireplace place different demands on natural stone. Start with traffic, weather exposure, water, installation method, and the appearance you want after years of use.
For driveways, ask about structural base design and product thickness. For pool surrounds, prioritize comfortable edges, water management, surface temperature, and a finish suited to wet conditions.
Compare sandstone, limestone, granite, basalt, and travertine
Sandstone is valued for warm color, natural texture, and broad format availability. Limestone offers calmer blue-grey, charcoal, or ivory palettes. Granite and basalt are selected for dense performance and contemporary architectural character.
Travertine brings a timeless appearance and is popular for pool coping and classic patterned paving. Quartzite and slate add expressive natural movement when color variation is central to the design.
Real stone is not simply a finish. It is part of the architecture and the way a place is experienced.
Select finish, thickness, and edge together
Natural-cleft, flamed, tumbled, brushed, honed, and split-face surfaces behave differently visually and underfoot. Review the actual finish on a current sample rather than assuming two stones with the same name will feel alike.
Ask for nominal dimensions, thickness tolerance, pattern composition, pieces per pallet, and regional stock. Natural stone dimensions commonly carry an approximate tolerance, which should be accommodated during installation.
Account for climate and long-term care
Outdoor stone must work with local temperature swings, seasonal moisture, sun exposure, drainage, and irrigation. Discuss installation assembly and maintenance with a qualified local professional.
Sealers are not universally necessary and should suit the specific stone, finish, exposure, and desired appearance. Always test a small area before applying any treatment broadly.
